Description
YOUR SAILING ADVENTURES AWAIT YOU! LOTS OF BOAT AND A DINGHY! PLENTY OF RIGGING! USE AS A LIVEABOARD OR SAIL THE GULF!

The 1980 Gulfstar Sailmaster 47 is a center cockpit cruising yacht designed by Vince and Richard Lazzara, built in the U.S. by Gulfstar Yachts. It was one of the early raised-salon sailboats, offering generous headroom, large windows for natural light, and an unusually spacious interior for its time.

The owners have lived on this vessel since they've purchased it in 2022. The photos are from 2022 and not current.

With a solid fiberglass hull and balsa-cored deck, the boat measures 47.4 feet overall, with a waterline length of 40.5 feet, a beam of nearly 14 feet, and a shoal draft of 5.5 feet, making it suitable for coastal cruising and island hopping.

The layout has a large aft master stateroom with a queen berth and en-suite head, a forward guest cabin, and a spacious main salon with wraparound seating and panoramic views. The U-shaped galley is well-equipped for extended cruising. The black water system has been disconnected and now has 2 composting toilet.

This boat is ketch-rigged, with a sail area just over 800 square feet. It's powered by a Perkins 6.354 Marine
135 HP diesel engine and outfitted with additional gear like a diesel generator, watermaker, 2 low-watt solar panels on top of canopy, bow thruster, and windlass.

There are four 12v batteries and a couple under settee glassmat (gel cell) batteries.

The seller has made many upgrades including a still sealed water maker. The capacity is 125v so it will need a generator to run it. Also upgraded is a dehumidifier that has never been used. It just needs the drain hose to run down to the bilge. Included is a Dometic fridge with ice maker.

Cruising speed is 7 knots. The owner has sails for everything but rigging needs a little attention.

This vessel is ready to go down the ICW.

While we will always attempt to provide you with a TRUE representation of every vessel we market, during any purchase from Pop you will be encouraged to schedule an inspection from an independent, accredited surveyor and every purchase WILL ALWAYS BE subject to your satisfaction with the results from your independent survey and your own personal trial run.

Condition:
The owners have lived on this vessel since they've purchased it in 2022. The photos are from 2022 and not current.

The engine's in good shape, the owner confirms.

Vessel includes an automatic windlass anchor but it only works going up, down is manual.

Some electrical work needs to be done under cabinets where the circuits are. The Garmin plotter might need the connections cleaned. The depth finder might not work

The mast has been rebuilt. The standing rigging is great.

Although there are a couple of ACs, they are nonfunctional - old style refrigerants style. Probably would be more feasible to replace them than get them upgraded.

Generator (diesel) does not have any output and might need some attention, maybe the breaker.

This vessel is smoke free but not pet free. The owners have taken great care in maintaining this beauty.

It has 3 non-working furlers. It's a power boat with masts.

None of the navigation systems work (from previous showing)

The oven door latch will need to be fabricated as the original parts are no longer available on the market. In addition, the gas delivery system for the oven is LEAKY and will need to be inspected and repaired BEFORE USE as it is currently a fire hazard.

From seller:
The Electronics are somewhat dated and again suffering from neglect. I was able to get the plotter to work on the helm by disconnecting and connecting the main connector for the display in the binnacle but a good connector cleaning and contact treatment would do wonders for the current gauges and dials at the helm. The electronics at the nav station all appear to be working but need adjustment. Some of the electronic controls for the charging system and the engine will need to be examined/repaired if needed. The last I knew the vhf radio worked well.

The entire electrical control panel will need to be checked out as the wiring is 45 years old and of unknown quality after several different owners. All marker and navigation lights will need to be examined/repaired.

The repair to the Step of the Main Mast that was done by Zern Rigging in Pensacola was "completed" over a year ago. (message from seller Oct 2025)

Buyer asked: What kind of tension does the rigging need?

From the seller: To tension a shroud, first ensure the mast is centered and then tighten the appropriate turnbuckle or fitting, typically counter-clockwise, until the desired tension is reached, which can be measured with a tension gauge or by ensuring the leeward shrouds remain snug when sailing. Start with the cap shrouds tight and adjust lower shrouds so the mast remains straight and the leeward shrouds don't get slack when on a windward tack.

Per seller (March 2025):
The engine and the Transmission are both in good enough shape to easily carry the boat to Chicago but I would suggest an oil change prior for the engine. I have filters and I believe oil already.
In addition there is a charging fault in the starter circuit that I have not been able to address yet. I will stipulate to the start system repair prior to sales.
As stated there are sails available with the boat but condition is unknown, I was in process with the mast step before I was ready to send the sails out to examination by a Sailmaster - so I cannot attest to a 'full complement of sails" at this time. I have done nothing with the sails since I purchased the boat. There are four furlers on this rig. The forward furler (Pro-Furler) in very good condition, cutter rigged, a main furler servicing the boom (Harken furler - needs rebuild) and a mizzen boom furler (Harken) and mizzen furler (Harken). Only the Cutter Rigged, Pro-furler is in servicable condition without a rebuild leaving 3 furlers not in proven working condition.

As of buyer's showing 2026 March:
This is my impression of the boat. If you do find someone willing to buy it, suggest that they do a full, out of water survey so they'll know what they are getting into. I'm sure you'd recommend a survey but the buyer might try to cut corners. The only good thing I can say about the boat is it still floats and is roomy. If a little cosmetic work was done, It would make someone a nice condo on the water if they have no desire to leave the dock. I would possibly consider buying if the price was under $20K. I know that's low but I've rebuilt sailboats before when I was younger and dumber. The project always costs 5 times more than you originally thought and takes 10 times longer. Old, neglected boats are very labor intensive and expensive. Anyway, use what you can out of the following paragraph.
This boat can best be described as a project boat for someone with very deep pockets and a lot of time. The boat cannot be sailed as is. The hull condition is unknown. According to the seller, the boat has not been out of the water while he's owned it. From what I was told, there's no record of the boat being pulled and maintenance done on the bottom by the previous owner either. The boat will most likely need a bottom job. The running rigging will need to be 100% replaced. According to the seller, the standing rigging was inspected during the mast repair and is in good condition but there's no documentation. During the viewing, the electrical systems wouldn't power up and the motor was unstartable due to electrical issues per the seller. Sail conditions are unknown. Seems like many mechanical systems (generator, A/C, etc) are inoperable. The current cosmetic condition of the boat is very poor. Up to date photos of the boat would be nice because the photos in the listing are not accurate. This was the extent of the viewing.

Per Buyer as of Showing 2026 Apr: Couldn't get the generator running. Dog Hair is everywhere. The vessel needs a deep cleaning. There is Standing Water in the forward shower. Seller states that the sump pumps are not working. There was a wet towel on the dehumidifier and was dripping causing peeling the wood on the wall.
AC doesn't work. Needs that air flow in there. There is Sludgy water in the bilge. Buyer sees this as a Cutter rig with a Furling main. The sail is laying on the deck.
Power issues. Nothing works The wood floors are scratched up with varnish worn where the rolling chair is. Looks like Nicotine inside the boat.
Seems like this vessel needs about $30k of work.
Delamination on the keel and blisters on the boat were also noted.

As of Apr 2026: He is having issues with the gray water sump pump. He is currently working on the inverter.

As far as the blisters, they are still there but sellers state the blisters are not bothering them especially since they only go 2-4 knots.

Per questions regarding the condition of the sails from a perspective buyer May 2026:

Sail condition is an unknown. Visually there doesn't appear to be any significant damage that would require replacement, but I was going to have an expert check the sails thinking that there may only need some repair done rather than replacement. As far as standing rigging, there does not appear to be any visual reason to replace the the standard rigging. I had Zern rigging examine the standing rigging and photograph the fittings when the mast was removed to repair the step and replace the refrigerator and again, no visual cause for concern was detected. However, there is a school of thought that 7 years is the magic number for replacing standing rigging and this rigging is more than 7 years old as evidenced by the newer fitting on most of the rig. Still no evidence of stretch, wear or tear except on the belcrank of the rudder where there is a single wire loose on the cable spanning the rudder belcrank.
Other than these items mentioned I see no indication of poor standing rigging condition, myself.
There are still no other problems I see except some indication of older running rigging - mostly mildew.
But these are the seller's opinions.

Here is the response of another prospective buyer from 2026 Aug:

The sailboat has been sitting fo years after those photos on the website were taken.

The sails are also not there anymore, except for one that I saw so I dont think a sea trial would be possible.

The topside of the boat has a significant amount of cracks in the topcoat and there are soft spots dotted around the deck.

There was a water leak in the shower, the owner said that it had been spraying water for months.

This is a serious project boat and it should be in the $20,000 range.

Someone gave them an AC which keeps them comfortably cool.
